Are You Aware of VOCs and the Issues They Can Cause?

Baxta Engineered Coatings prides itself on providing the best and safest quality system to the construction industry. To keep our values at the top of our decision making we like to investigate the materials and chemicals that are used within our systems. Are you aware that most paints contain a high level of VOC’s and overtime this could cause a detrimental issue for your health?

The team at Baxta believes knowledge is key when choosing the correct system for your project so they have asked some important questions to help you make the best decision for you and your project.

Question: What is a VOC?
Answer: A VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds and it is ‘a group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. Breathing low levels of VOCs for long periods of time may increase some people’s risk of health effect” (Aus Gov, 2018).

Question: Where do you find VOC’s around your house?
Answer: Common products that VOCs can be found in are paints and thinners, adhesives, glues, cleaners and disinfectants, carpets, building materials and furnishings. These materials are essential in the construction industry which increases the importance of researching the VOC levels contained within them.

Question: How can you be exposed to VOCs?
Answer: There are two ways to be exposed to VOC and those ways are through inhalation and skin contact. Inhalation of VOCs can be caused by the VOC gas being released by products and processes that contain VOCs. Skin contact exposure is caused by touching products that contain and release VOCs.

Question: How do VOC’s effect your health?
Answer: VOC’s can affect your health both short term and long term. Symptoms for short-term exposure include:
– Irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract
– Headaches
– Dizziness
– Visual disorders
– Memory problems
If you or someone you know are showing signs of VOC exposure, please see a medical professional immediately.

Question: How is Baxta Engineered Coatings VOC levels compared to other leading paint manufactures for paint systems?
Answer: Baxta specifies in systems not products and because of this we strive to ensure our VOC levels are well below those of our competitors and aligns with the standards set by the Good Environmental Choice of Australia (GECA). We have put together a table to indicate some of our systems VOC levels compared to two leading paint companies.
